For the water babies, a swim hat is a must! If you’ve ever wondered “do I really need a swim hat for my child? Can’t I just use a regular sun hat?” The answer is: well yes! Technically, you could. BUT, the fabric is not suited for use in pools and so the prints and colour could bleach, fade or become discoloured. Not to mention, the harshness of pool chemicals can cause the fabric to stretch beyond repair. And the ocean’s salt water can also cause discolouration in dark-coloured hats. So, a swim hat is a good option for those warm summer days when you need to cool down in the water.

Bedhead’s Swim collection is rated UPF50+ excellent protection in its design and fabric – making it the perfect summer swim hat for water babies. With a felt brim in our regular Toddler Hats, we’re unable to create a beach hat version without it flopping drastically in eyes – something we strive to prevent! So, we suggest a Legionnaire style swim hat for this age group, or if they’re on the bigger side, a Classic/Ponytail Swim Hat. Made from polyester elastane nylon, the hats are quick-drying, chlorine-friendly and pool safe.

Our legionnaire style is ideal for babies and toddlers - the back flap keeps little necks protected from the sun and makes it easy for outdoor daytime naps as they fold flat comfortably behind your child’s neck while they’re in a stroller or snoozing on the sand at the beach. Our anti-flop brims also mean that no matter how wet they get, they won’t flop in your toddler’s eyes. They can also be angled to shield the face from the sun and glare while your little one is lying down.

Australian summers are harsh, and UV rays are even more deadly when around reflective surfaces such as water – all that sunlight bounces off the water and onto little bodies, making a hat and a rash vest absolute essentials while in the pool or at the beach. You could even add a wet bag to match the swim hat – they’re in the same fun prints as our hats. Our rashies coordinate beautifully with our swim hats, and are also rated UPF50+. Combined with other sun-safe measures like shade and sunscreen you can be sure your child is protected when they’re out in the sun. Babies and children are vulnerable to UV radiation and more susceptible to sunburn and skin damage. Any UV exposure in their early years greatly increases the risk of developing skin cancer as an adult, and we don’t wish that on anyone, having experienced it a lot in the Bedhead team.

Our job is to help parents like you protect their precious babies any time they’re outside – whatever the time of year or occasion. While our Swim hats are really only designed for use around water, we have a beautiful and varied range of legionnaire hats and bucket hats perfect for everyday wear at the park, the backyard or daycare.
