Make Your Own Mini Animal Portraits!

If you've got a few egg cartons lying around and some crafty kids (or just a crafty moment of your own), here’s a sweet upcycle project that turns recyclables into adorable little animal portraits! These are super fun to make and perfect for fridge decorations, greeting cards, or even as Easter gift tags. Let’s hop to it!

What You’ll Need:

  • Egg carton

  • Cardboard
  • White-out pen or gel pens

  • Scissors

  • Coloured or patterned paper

  • PVA glue or hot glue

  • Textas or coloured pencils

  • Your imagination!

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut out an oval from cardboard.
This will be the "frame" for your animal portrait. Think of it like a mini cameo or photo! You can use an old cereal box, a piece of packaging—anything sturdy but easy to cut.

2. Draw a decorative frame around your oval.
Using a white-out pen, gel pens, or even paint pens, create a border around your oval. Doodles, swirls, dots - go wild! This is where you get to be really playful with your design.

3. Snip out a cup section from your egg carton.
This little rounded shape will become the animal’s face. Trim it neatly and make sure it sits nicely within your cardboard frame.

4. Cut out some ears!
From the flatter parts of the egg carton, cut ear shapes depending on what animal you’re making: Bunny has long ears, Bear has small rounded ears, Cat & Dog has triangular or pointy ears. Stick with the classics or invent your own imaginary creature!

5. Make a body shape from paper.
Cut a small, rounded triangle from coloured or patterned paper to form your animal’s outfit/body. If you don’t have any paper on hand, simply draw directly on the cardboard base instead.

6. Time to decorate!
Draw on a cute little face with markers or gel pens, colour in the ears, and add fun outfit details (bow ties, buttons, collars, you name it)

7. Glue everything in place.
Use PVA glue (or hot glue with adult supervision) to attach the head (egg carton cup), ears, and body onto your cardboard oval. Press gently and allow to dry.

Ta-da! You're Done!

Now you’ve got a sweet little animal friend peeking out from your handmade frame. Make a whole gallery of them—one for every family member, or even turn them into name tags for the Easter table.
