What Does UPF Actually Mean?

When it comes to keeping little ones sun safe, you’ve probably seen the term UPF 50+ on hats, swimwear and clothing... but what does it actually mean?

With Australia having some of the harshest UV levels in the world, understanding UPF can help parents make more informed choices when spending time outdoors. From beach days to playground adventures, the right sun protection makes a big difference.

What is UPF?

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It measures how much ultraviolet (UV) radiation can penetrate a fabric and reach the skin.

The higher the UPF rating, the better the protection.

In simple terms, a UPF 50+ fabric allows only a very small amount of UV radiation through the material.

This is especially important for babies and young children, whose skin is much more sensitive to sun exposure.

Why Does UPF Matter for Kids?

Children spend a huge amount of time outdoors... at daycare, the park, on family walks, at sport or playing in the backyard.

While sunscreen is important, it can rub off, wash away or be missed in certain areas. UPF-rated clothing and hats provide an added layer of consistent protection throughout the day.

A good UPF hat can help protect vulnerable areas like the face, ears, scalp, & neck. (These are some of the areas most commonly exposed to the sun)

UPF vs SPF: What’s the Difference?

This is one of the most common questions parents ask. Although they sound similar, UPF and SPF measure two completely different things.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how well sunscreen protects skin from UVB rays, which are the rays most associated with sunburn.

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how effectively a fabric blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Unlike sunscreen, UPF protection is built into the material itself, meaning it doesn’t wear off throughout the day in the same way sunscreen can. That’s why sun-safe experts often recommend using both

Are All Hats Sun Protective?

Not always.

A regular fashion hat may provide shade, but it may not be made from UPF-rated fabric or offer enough coverage.

When choosing a sun-safe hat for children, look for UPF 50+ fabric, wide brims, neck coverage, secure fit for active play, breathable & lightweight materials.

The more coverage a hat provides, the more protection it can offer during outdoor play.

Does UPF Still Matter on Cloudy Days?

Yes!! UV rays can still penetrate clouds, even when the weather feels cool or overcast.

In Australia, UV levels can remain high for much of the year, which is why sun protection is important beyond just summer beach days.

Daily habits like wearing a hat on walks, at the playground or during daycare outdoor time can help build lifelong sun-safe routines.

UPF is simply a way of measuring how effectively fabric protects skin from UV radiation.

For parents, choosing UPF-rated hats and clothing can help make outdoor adventures safer and more comfortable for little ones (while adding one more layer of peace of mind)

Because childhood is meant to be spent outside, exploring, playing and making memories in the sunshine!! That’s why you can trust that we’ve got the sun protection covered so kids can play all day long.
