Our top flat lay tips

Those little milestones come around so quickly, and capturing them doesn’t need to involve a professional photographer or fancy equipment. With a few simple tricks, your phone can help you create beautiful, meaningful photos right at home.

Our Sweet Beginnings milestone cards are designed to help you celebrate each of those special firsts... from their first smile to their first steps. Here are a few of our favourite tips for creating the perfect flat lay.

1. Find your light

Good lighting makes all the difference.

If you're shooting indoors, set up your flat lay near a large window where you have plenty of soft, natural light. A bright spot on the floor, bed or a neutral blanket can make the perfect backdrop.

Try to avoid direct sunlight coming straight through the window, as this can create harsh shadows and bright patches across your photo. Instead, look for soft, diffused light that gently illuminates your setup.

Taking your photo outdoors?

Find a shady spot rather than placing your setup directly in the sun. Under a verandah, beside a building or beneath some trees can give you lovely, even lighting without the harsh shadows.

2. Choose accessories that tell the story

The little details can make your milestone photo feel much more personal.

Rather than adding accessories simply because they look pretty, choose pieces that connect to the milestone you're capturing. Think about the things your little one is using, learning or loving at that particular stage.

Celebrating their first teeth? Add their favourite teether.
Capturing their first steps? Include their first pair of shoes.
Their first trip to the beach? Add their swimmers, sunglasses or a favourite beach toy.

These little details help tell the story of that moment and can make the photo even more meaningful when you look back on it years from now.

Sometimes the most ordinary things become the most special keepsakes... because they're a reminder of what life looked like during that little chapter.

3. Odd numbers work best

When it comes to styling your flat lay, there's a simple design trick that can make your composition feel more balanced: stick to odd numbers.

Instead of adding lots of accessories, try grouping your milestone card with either two accessories or four accessories.

For example, pair the card with their favourite teether and a small toy, or create a slightly fuller arrangement with four meaningful pieces around the card.

Using an odd number of elements creates a more natural, visually interesting composition and gives your eye somewhere to move around the image. It also helps prevent your flat lay from feeling too symmetrical or overly staged.

Remember, though, less is often more. Your milestone card should remain the hero of the photo, with the accessories supporting the story rather than competing for attention.

4. Use your phone's grid

You don't need a professional camera to take a beautiful flat lay. Your phone is more than capable — you just need to make the most of the tools already built into it.

Before you start shooting, turn on the grid in your camera settings. The grid makes it much easier to line up your card, keep your edges straight and make sure your flat lay isn't accidentally sitting on an angle.

When shooting from above, try to position your phone directly over your setup rather than standing at an angle. This will give you that classic flat lay perspective and help prevent your card and accessories from looking distorted.

Take a few different shots and don't be afraid to move things around between each one. Sometimes a tiny adjustment to the position of a shoe, toy or card can make the whole composition feel more balanced.

Tip: Add your hand for a little extra interest

A perfectly styled flat lay is beautiful, but sometimes adding a little movement can make the image feel even more personal.
