FAQ Video's

Bedhead kids and baby sun hats are designed for great comfort, a perfect fit & rated UPF50+ Excellent sun protection in Australian conditions.

Below are some videos to help you with our commonly asked questions, like how to measure your child to ensure you get the best size that will give you the most wear out of your hat! If you have any questions please email us at contactus@bedheadhats.com.au.

are just the same. The panels, crown depth, fabric and UPF50+ rating are all the same. How they differ is who they're most suited to. So Legionnaire is a perfect first hat – the one to learn with and they're also great for hat haters. They sit nice and smooth under the child's neck and there's a lot less for hat haters to grab onto to pull off. The Toddler Bucket has a brim that goes all the way around. So it's the next step after a Legionnaire once your child is happy wearing hats.

Which Style? Classic Bucket vs Ponytail Bucket

the brim depth and crown depths are the same, they've both rated UPF 50+, and they're both made of our gorgeous soft cotton knit fabric. They both also have a foam brim that goes all the way around - it's our unique anti-flop technology. How they differ is the Ponytail Bucket has a paneled crown so we can include the little ponytail slit at the back for the girls, while the Classic Bucket has a band around the front of the crown and is more your classic bucket hat styling.

many similarities. They’re both rated UPF 50+ in protection. They're both made out of our super-soft cotton stretch knit, and they both have the same depth of crown, offering the same protection. How they differ is who they're best suited to. The Legionnaire is nice and soft and flat at the back of the neck so it makes it perfect for babies and toddlers still in the pram or strollers. They're also the best style for hat haters because they seem so smooth and flat to the back of a child's neck. There's so much less for them to grab onto to pull off. Our Classic Bucket hat and Ponytail Bucket hats have the anti-flop brim that goes all the way around. So they're best suited for children that are upwardly mobile with big strong necks that are always running around and busy.

Which style? Swim Legionnaire vs Swim Bucket
What's the difference between our Swim Legionnaire and our Swim Bucket hat? Well it's basically who they're best suited to... Read more/less

The Swim Legionnaire is much more suited to little children with less neck control – the flap at the back will sit nice and smoothly and fold under their neck if needed. The Bucket hat has the anti-flop brim, so no matter how wet it gets at the beach or pool, it won't flop in front of their eyes.

Who makes a Bedhead hat?
“I'm often asked who makes our Bedhead hats. It's a beautiful factory full of gorgeous workers in Changzhou, China. I visit the factory... Read more/less

every year to inspect our stock before it's shipped back to Australia. Our factory is small in comparison to many others in China. It consists of about 20 machinists and about six other workers who do all the pressing, trimming and cutting. Our machinists are the best. They’re second to none. They make our hats so beautifully and perfectly every time - and stretch fabric is not easy to sew. They just do such a fabulous job. The factory owners are very much involved in the manufacturing process too. Mr Wang is the factory owner. He is involved in the purchasing so he makes sure that all of our thread colours are right and that our fabric arrives on time. He also prepares all the markers which are the cutters used to cut out the pattern pieces. Wendy is his wife and I adore Wendy. She's amazing. She takes care of the factory floor, making sure all the machinists are on task and the flow is right so we don't get any delays. She's also a little bit of a control freak. She likes to turn through every single Bedhead Baby Bucket. She believes that she does the best job in the brim and won't trust any of the other workers to do it!”

Richelle, founder and CEO, Bedhead Hats

paper interfacing in the brim which is upright and lovely for a few washes, but then all of a sudden the hat starts to dip in front of the child's eyes. Now children are beautiful and they just want to focus on playing and having fun, but if their hat flops in front of their eyes you can best be guaranteed it's going to get pulled off pretty quickly! Our anti-flop brim is constructed in such a way that no matter how many washes it gets it still stays upright. It folds nice and easily into a bag – and after a few minutes in the sun, the brim straightens out beautifully. It’s lovely and lightweight and that’s why most children love to wear our hats because they simply forget that it's on!

How to take care of your Bedhead hat
We like to keep it simple and easy at Bedhead and caring for your hat is very similar: cold machine wash and line dry in the shade. Here are... Read more/less

a few other things you should and shouldn’t do to ensure your hat stays in tip top shape:

✔ Wash your hat every few weeks This helps the knit relax and come back into place.

✔ Make use of the “return to” label Reapply your mobile number or child’s name to the “return to” label every now and then - you can't have your Bedhead hat getting lost!

✘ Don’t tumble dry It can heat up the foam in the brim too much causing it to melt and disintegrate. So stay clear of the tumble dryer.

✘ No bleach please It will damage the cotton and you will lose your stretch. Also the in-wash brighteners and whiteners. Sometimes they can damage the colour of your heart so probably stay clear of those also.

How to measure for a Bedhead hat

a guide – the perfect fit comes down to knowing the circumference of your child’s head.

Step 1: Find something to measure with. If you don't have a measuring tape, a ribbon or a little skinny belt can be really handy. A peg is also necessary to hold that measurement in place.

Step 2: Take the ribbon and place it around the back of the head. Draw it forward over the top of the ears and rest it in the middle of the brow. Use a peg to hold the measurement in place before taking the ribbon away.

Step 3: Use a measuring tape or a ruler and find out what that measurement was.

an age guide, but this is on the generous side. Boys and girls are very different in their head circumference sizes. Boys are usually a little on the generous side, while girls are usually much more petite. The best way to get a perfect fit without trying the hat on is to measure. All of our hat sizes are listed in centimetre circumferences, so measure your child! Then choose a hat size that's closest to that measurement. The stretch knit fabric allows for a nice snug fit, plus enough room for the child to grow.

Style feature: Legionnaire
The legionnaire hat is where all sun safety should start. It's where we like to teach children how to be comfortable with hats... Read more/less

It’s specially designed to be worn in prams and strollers and carriers because of the lovely soft smooth finish at the back of the neck. Legionnaires are also the best style to convert haters into lovers because there is a lot less to grab on to to pull it off - it's a lot smoother around the child's neck. Now just like all of our hats, this one has a stretchy chin strap and the adjustable toggle. Now if you don’t want the chin strap on for baby that’s no worry at all. You can cut it off and it won't affect the hat in any way. Made of 90 per cent cotton makes it nice and light and cool for children through hot summer days. It's rated UPF 50+ Excellent Protection - the highest that you can achieve in Australian Standards. The Legionnaire hat is a Sun-Smart-recommended style so you can be happy and confident for day care or child care that it is one of the best styles for protection. Just like all Bedhead hats, this one has our Return-to label in there also. And they're so easy to take care of - cold machine wash and line dry in the shade. It's that simple.

Style feature: Toddler Bucket

The brim is reinforced with a felt so it's still soft and malleable and can mould under their necks, but it's got enough body that it will stay upright no matter how many washes the hat gets. This style is still perfect to be worn in prams and strollers and carriers because it is soft at the back of their neck. It will just mould under them while they're sleeping or looking up at the world. Just like all of our hats, it has a stretchy chin strap with an adjustable toggle. Now if you don't like chin straps on little babies you are more than welcome to cut it off. It will not affect the hat in any way at all. Just like all of our hats, it is rated UPF 50+ to the Australian Standard. It also applies to the Sun Smart Styling Guidelines, so it's a bucket hat with a required brim depth. Made of 90 per cent cotton, it's cool and soft and lightweight for children to wear, especially on hot summer days. There's a “Return to” label at the back of the brim so if they do happen to pull it off and chuck it out of the pram, it will get returned to you. It’s easy to wash and wear – just a cold machine wash and line dry in the shade.

anti-flop brim. You'll see here that it's fully protective, but it's not going to flop in front of her eyes no matter how much it gets washed. It's got foam in the brim so it stays upright no matter what. The Classic Bucket hat is most suited to children who are physically able and running around busy. We've got a stretch chin strap so it keeps it nice and firm on their heads with a little adjustable toggle below. They’re nice and stretchy, they’ve got a Return-to label in the back, and they're all rated UPF 50+.

are created with an anti-flop brim so they never flop in front of the children's eyes no matter how much they're washed. Our Bucket Hats are best suited to children who are fully mobile, active and busy, and running around. A cute feature of our Ponytail Bucket is the ponytail slit at the back. It's a nice little slit at the back, not a big gaping hole, and it allows the children to keep hair off their necks on hot summer days. Just like all of our hats it's made from our soft, stretchy cotton knit with a stretchy chin strap with an adjustable table. All have a return-to label on the back and all are rated UPF 50+ - the best in protection.

It's lightweight and dries really quickly. Being 100 per cent nylon though it's most suited in wet water environments. The legionnaire style is best for young little children learning sun safety. It sits nice and flat at the back of their neck, making it very comfy for wearing when they're laying on the beach. Just like all of our hats, it has a stretchy chin strap and adjustable toggle, is rated UPF 50+, which is the highest level of protection. It’s easy to take care of – just wash and wear, cold wash and line dry in the shade. There's also the return-to label at the back under the flap.

flop in front of the child's eyes. It features our unique anti-flop brim technology so no matter how many washes it has, no matter how many days at the beach, it will always stay upright. Our Swim hats are all chlorine-resistant so they’re perfect for the pool. They’re 100 per cent nylon, so it means it dries nice and quickly, but probably isn’t suitable for everyday wear as it could get a little hot - that's what our cotton hats are for. All of our swim hats have a stretchy chin strap with adjustable toggle so no matter how windy the day is at the beach, it will always stay on. Our Swim hats are rated UPF 50+ Excellent Protection, they have a return-to label in under the brim, and they're also easy to take care of: just a cold machine wash and line dry in the shade.

It's chlorine resistant, made from 100 per cent nylon like the stretch rashie fabric which means it's perfect for wet environments, but probably not suitable for everyday wear because it could get a little bit hot. We've included a great feature for girls in our Ponytail Bucket Swim hats – there’s a spot for their hair to keep it nice and cool off the back of their necks. The stretchy chin strap is adjustable with a little toggle so no matter how windy the day is, it’s going to stay on her head at the beach. It’s rated UPF 50+ Excellent Protection, is easy to take care with cold machine wash and line dry in the shade. There's even a return-to label in the back under the brim.

How we use cookies

A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer's hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your preferences.

We use traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps us analyse data about webpage traffic and improve our website in order to tailor it to customer needs. We only use this information for statistical analysis purposes and then the data is removed from the system.

Overall, cookies help us provide you with a better website by enabling us to monitor which pages you find useful and which you do not. A cookie in no way gives us access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with us.

You can choose to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. This may prevent you from taking full advantage of the website.
