Back to School Craft Ideas Kids Will Love!

We’re starting with painted pencil cases (because they’ll be used every single day), followed by a fun fishing lure bag charm that kids absolutely love personalising.

Back-to-school prep isn’t just about uniforms and booklists... it’s also the perfect time to get kids excited with a little creative fun. These two easy crafts are ideal for school-aged kids, make practical keepsakes, and can be done with minimal supplies.

Craft 1: Painted Pencil Cases

A blank canvas pencil case is the perfect base for a creative afternoon. Each one turns out completely unique, and they’re sturdy enough to last the whole school year.

What You’ll Need:

  • Canvas Pencil Case

  • Acrylic or Fabric Paint
  • Tape (optional)

  • Cardboard Toilet Roll

  • Paper Plate or Palette

  • Paintbrush

  • Optional: Googly Eyes, Beads, String

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Start with your canvas pencil case
Lay it flat on a protected surface. Make sure it’s clean and dry before painting.

.

2. Create a background (optional)

Use tape to section off simple stripes or shapes, then paint over it for a patterned background.

Prefer a minimalist look? Skip this step and keep it plain.

3. Make your stamp

Take a cardboard toilet roll:

- Squeeze one side to create a strawberry shape

- Squeeze both sides to create a fish shape

4. Stamp your design

Dip the edge of the toilet roll into paint and gently stamp onto the pencil case. Repeat to create a pattern or feature design.

5. Add the details

Fish: Paint on a tail and eye (or glue on a googly eye once dry)

Strawberry: Paint green leaves on top and add tiny yellow dots for seeds

6. Optional personalisation

Thread beads onto string and attach them to the zipper pull for an extra-special finishing touch.

Ta-da! You're Done!

Once your pencil case is dry and personalised, it’s ready for school!

Craft 2: Fishing Lure Bag Charms

These bag charms are a huge hit (especially with kids who love colour, sparkle, or fishing) They’re quick to make and perfect for school bags or sports backpacks.

What You’ll Need:

  • Fishing lures (let kids choose their favourite)

  • Pliers
  • Jump Rings

  • Lobster Clasp or Keyring

  • Beads

  • String

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Choose a lure

Let kids pick the colour or style they love most.

.

2. Remove hooks

An adult must carefully remove all hooks using pliers before kids handle the lure.

3. Add the hardware

Use pliers to attach a jump ring and clasp to the lure.

4. Personalise it

Thread beads onto string, knot securely, and tie onto the jump ring/s for extra flair.

5. Attach to bags

Clip onto school bags, lunch bags, or pencil cases.

Finished!

Your fishing lure bag charm is ready to clip on and show off.
